Waking up with Roman Amato plastered to my side isnât the way I expected my morning to go. Of course, sleeping in his bed also wasnât on my bingo card.
Sitting up, I try not to disturb Roman, though that seems to make him try to bury himself deeper into my side. At first, I think itâs just the two of us, until I look around the room and find Hollis sitting in a chair off to the side, intently focused on a laptop.
Shifting to the side, I reach for my hearing aids on the nightstand, only to curse and toss them back when the stupid beep of a dying battery alerts in the right one, and the left doesnât do anything. Stupid fucking little pieces of technology. All that money, only for them to die at the most inconvenient of times.
Sighing, I look at the sleeping man next to me. Roman isâ¦way too pretty for his own good. Itâs almost hard to believe that heâs the type of person who would one day rule over a mafia Family. But looks can be deceiving, and despite the shit my cousins say about him, I know all the rumors are true. Sometimes, you donât have to see to believe, sometimes reputations can speak for themselves, and in a business like this, a personâs reputation matters, because theyâve done something to earn it.
Movement at the foot of the bed has me looking over and meeting Hollisâs eyes. He smiles a little and signs, âHe looks innocent, doesnât he?â
âI was just thinking that.â I hesitate before continuing, then decide, what the hell? âMy cousins donât think much of him. They think heâs spoiled, and Tennant favors him.â
I canât hear the snort, but from Hollisâs expression, I can guess thatâs what he does.
âTen doesnât do favorites. If anything, he works Roman harder than anyone else. See his nails?â
I cast a look at Romanâs hands before turning back to Hollis, not understanding.
âTennant doesn't let him wear polish during training. It's a thing between them. Roman will do a lot in order to better himself, and prove he deserves his title of heir, but sometimes it's stifling,â he explains. âSometimes Roman will remove the polish if told to, but sometimes, Tennant has to hold him down. Just depends on the day, and how insecure Roman is feeling at that moment.â
He smiles a little at what I'm sure is the incredulity on my face. âYes, Roman gets insecure. Like I said, his position is stifling at times. He knows he's good at what he does, but it didn't take long for Tennant to show him heâs better.
âRoman is prideful, and sometimes his arrogance is his downfall, but heâs also young. Thereâs time for him to learn. This life isnât for the weak, but Roman is barely an adult, and those two sides of him clash at times. He might have trained his whole life to take his fatherâs place one day, but that doesn't mean itâs easy. Imagine being groomed from a young age to be one thing and nothing else.
